Craig Wright has taken a step closer with his Bitcoin claim antics. By filing and receiving grant from the United States Copyright Office, for registration of Bitcoin’s whitepaper and original Bitcoin code; to certify him as the author and hence proclaim himself as Satoshi Nakamoto.
By this move, the US Copyright Office becomes the first government agency to recognize Wright as the Bitcoin white paper author.
Over the course of this saga, the Australian entrepreneur continues to maintain his claims to being the creator of Bitcoin and to have written the Bitcoin white paper under the pseudonym – Satoshi Nakamoto.
A press release today shows that the U.S officials have given confirmation that indeed Mr. Wright is Satoshi Nakamoto; a news which has fueled up controversy around the crypto community with some amused and others saying his claims hold little weight.
One of the displeased parties, Jerry Brito, CEO of Coin Center reacted:
Registering a copyright is just filing a form. The copyright office does not investigate the validity of the claim; they just register it. Unfortunately there is no official way to challenge a registration. If there are competing claims, the office will just register all of them.
Chris Harvey, a venture capital lawyer explains;
False copyright registration is “copy fraud”. Unfortunately, no private right of action exists under relevant US copyright law, 18 U.S.C. 506(e) . Violations are punishable by a fine of up to $2500. No company has ever been prosecuted for violating this.
Other commentators on the issue say: “he is Faketoshi” … “Filing United States copyright registration for Bitcoin (BTC) white paper is in itself a proof that this guy is not the author.”
Craig Wright Controversy / BIO
Craig Wright is an early Bitcoin figure and had started making claims he was Satoshi back in 2015. He moved on to Bitcoin Cash (BCH) after the Bitcoin hard fork; before creating his known Bitcoin SV (Bitcoin Satoshi Vision) which after today’s news of the copy right grant, the coin hit over 75% gains over the past 24 hours.
He believes Bitcoin SV will take the Bitcoin protocol back to his original vision.
It will be recalled that following his claims to being Bitcoin’s creator and threats of legal action, some exchanges including Kraken, Binance had delisted BSV in a solidarity move against what they described as lazy and unethical claims.
Binance CEO maintains strong resistance to Wright’s claims. In one of his tweets prior to delisting BSV, he said:
Craig Wright is not Satoshi. Anymore of this sh!t, we delist…I am against fraud, such as lying to be someone. As such, it is my strong opinion that Craig Wright is fraud.
In all, it is stated that this is not definite prove that Craig Wright is indeed Satoshi or the creator of the Bitcoin code; just as his claims remain widely doubted by other industry figures.
What are your thoughts on this? Is Craig Wright really Satoshi Nakamoto?
